The Vision: A complete education for the Meadows

Welbeck Primary School, Nottingham’s top-performing school in 2025, is expanding to become an all-through school for ages 2–16. With no local secondary school, children currently face long commutes and uncertainty after Year 6 at age 11. Welbeck Meadows will provide a continuous, personalised learning journey in the heart of the community, supporting academic, social, and emotional growth, while preparing students for future careers.

Key Highlights:

  • Small, focused year groups (max 75 pupils)
  • 30 new Year 7 places for local children
  • Seamless education from age 2 to 16
  • Strong community engagement and career pathways

The Need: Education and opportunity for the Meadows

The Meadows faces a critical gap in education: no local secondary school forces young people to travel long distances, disrupting friendships and well-being. With a higher proportion of children aged 0–17 than the Nottingham and East Midlands averages, limited educational facilities put local youth at risk of exclusion from essential opportunities.
Economically, the area experiences high unemployment, low attainment at age 16, and fewer apprenticeships, with many residents in low-skilled roles. Welbeck Meadows aims to change this by offering continuous, high-quality education and vocational pathways, equipping students with the skills needed for better jobs and stronger futures.

Why Welbeck Meadows Matters:

  • Continuous education from age 2–16, supporting well-being and resilience
  • Vocational pathways and career preparation with local employers
  • Addressing educational gaps and boosting local economic opportunities

The Plan: Building Welbeck Meadows

Welbeck Meadows will extend Welbeck Primary’s success into secondary and post-16 education, all within The Meadows. Working with Wolfgang Buttress Studio, the project integrates creative vision into the arts curriculum and school design, including architecture, interiors, branding, and landscaping.

The plan transforms the existing Kinglake Place site into a state-of-the-art all-through school with enhanced facilities for teaching, performance, dance, dining, and social spaces. Each year group will remain small (max 75 pupils) to ensure personalised learning, including 30 new Year 7 places for local children.

Key Features:

  • £23 million project with funding from the Department for Education, Nottingham City Council, and local/corporate donors
  • Advanced teaching and social spaces, plus outdoor landscaping
  • Strong vocational pathways, apprenticeships, and career preparation
  • Continuous education from age 2–16 with personalised support
